All The Problems Mice Can Bring To Your Frisco Home
You are probably aware that mice can make noises when they get into your home. It is possible to hear mice bumping and scratching inside your walls. But this is actually the exception, not the rule. Most of the time, mice don't let you know they're there. They quietly move about in your attic spaces, wall voids, basement, and hidden places throughout your home. As they do, they can present a threat to your health and property. Here are some of the ways mice can present problems.
Urine
As a mouse moves around inside your home, it will dribble urine. This is how a mouse marks its territory. Over time, well-traveled areas can begin to smell bad. But the smell of urine is not the worst part. The urine of a mouse can have harmful microorganisms, which may also be referred to as pathogens due to their ability to develop into diseases. One of many pathogens spread by mice is the bacteria that causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The symptoms of this disease may include a temperature that is above 101 â—¦F, body aches, difficulty breathing, dry cough, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Feces
As a mouse moves around inside your home, it will leave droppings in many places. These droppings can be a source of contamination in a few ways. Direct contact with food, dishes, silverware, and surfaces can cause contamination. Contact with mouse fur, and subsequent contact with food and sensitive areas, can cause contamination. When droppings are left in ventilation ducts, they can become dry and powdery and turn into airborne particulates. Feces left in stored furniture and other stored items can become a source of illness when these items are moved or handled.
Ectoparasites
Ticks, fleas, and other parasites that take mice as hosts can also present a disease threat to humans. One mouse can have dozens of ticks on its body. When these ticks fall off and search for a larger host, they can bite you. A tick, or another ectoparasite, that has fed on mouse blood can present more of a threat to you because the diseases they spread are zoonotic, which relates to their ability to pass from animals to humans.
House Fires
A little tiny mouse isn't much of a threat to you. Mice run from humans. They rarely bite. But the propensity of a mouse to chew on the wires and gas lines in your house can make it a big threat to your health and safety. This behavior can spark a house fire. Experts estimate that as much as 25 percent of unknown fires could be directly related to rodent infestations.
Mold
When a mouse chews a hole to get into your home, that hole can allow rainwater inside your walls. This can lead to mold issues. Over time, a mold problem can grow and the spore count inside your home can be elevated to a dangerous level.
Property Damage
Mice chew on many things. In fact, they never stop chewing. The teeth of a mouse never stop growing. Mice keep their teeth a manageable size by filing them down. Needless to say, it is not good to have chewing pests inside your Friso home. Just a few of the many things mice will chew on are:
- Door sweeps
- Doorstops
- Weatherstripping around doors
- Door and window frames
- Sole plates (also called sills)
- Exhaust vent covers
- Insulations—fiberglass and foam.
- Wallpaper
- Baseboards
- Sheetrock
- Upholstered furniture
- Cardboard boxes
- Boxed food items
