Frisco Spiders In Your Home

The bad news is: all spiders have venom and fangs.

The good news is: most spiders are not dangerous to humans.

Here in Frisco, there are only two types of spiders you need to worry about in terms of their venom. These, as you may already know, are the brown recluse spider and the black widow. A bite from one of these—characterized by a red hourglass shape in the case of the black widow and a brown violin shape for brown recluse spiders—should be immediately treated by a medical professional.

Even with these two dangerous spiders, it’s rare to get a bite. Spiders aren’t aggressive and bite only when they feel threatened.

Spiders come into homes following their food. They make webs and wait for prey, and if you accidentally reach your hand into that dark corner where the spider is hiding, you may get a bite.

Bites aside, spiders can be frightening and can attract other pests. They don’t belong in your home, so let’s look at some strategies for getting them out.

Three Steps To Spider Control

We’ve divided spider control into three important steps:

  • Step 1: Don’t attract spiders by offering them food.

This means you need to control other pests if you want to control spiders. Spiders often get inside looking for flies, mosquitoes, ants, and other pests. By limiting the presence of these other pests, you can also limit the number of spiders in your home.

Do this by thoroughly cleaning your kitchen and bathroom. Make sure to store all food and garbage in containers with lids. Don’t leave out pet food at night, or even birdseed. Never leave dirty dishes sitting out overnight and don’t forget to clean under appliances!

  • Step 2: Don’t invite spiders to come inside.

This may sound intuitive, but you could be allowing spiders in without realizing it. Check the exterior of your home for holes and cracks, and seal them with caulking or steel wool.

Don’t leave doors or windows open, or make sure intact screens are covering them. Install door sweeps, vent covers, and chimney covers. Always inspect items from the outdoors before bringing them inside.

  • Step 3: Don’t make them comfortable.

Once spiders do get inside, they’ll stay if they can find food and suitable habitat. To change that, start by sweeping away spider webs as soon as you see them. This will discourage spiders from staying.

Additionally, you can lower the moisture levels in your home. Spiders love moisture and will be happier to stay if the house is humid. Use a dehumidifier for rooms like the basement and attic to make them less attractive to spiders.

Finally, clean storage areas like closets. More clutter means more places for spiders to hide and make webs. If your space is clean and organized, you’ll be able to spot spiders sooner and take steps to stop them.
